CMUH Comprehensive Hearing Health Center Received the 17th National Innovation Award by Developing a Novel Self-fitting Sound Enhancement Earphone

The Comprehensive Hearing Health Center of the Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), Head and Neck Surgery Department, China Medial University Hospital (CMUH), is consisted of medical professionals including physicians, audiologists, and nurses. The center recently developed the “Self-fitting sound enhancement earphone based on Hearing-age” and received the 17th National Innovation Award.

 

Human ear start to have high-frequency hearing loss over the age of 40, and among people over the age of 60, there are 32% with hearing impairment. Obviously, hearing problems will increase with human age. In addition, recent reports have shown that besides stroke, hearing loss is the most important cause of Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, correcting the hearing loss will help reduce dementia, and the development of “Self-fitting Sound enhancement earphone based on Hearing-age” can cooperate with long-term care policy to lower the dementia rate and cut down social cost.

 

Presently, connecting the digital audio wearable products to the Internet on mobile phone is a global new trend. It is recognized by the academic community that the over-the-counter hearing aids are the most effective and convenient method to improve mild to moderate hearing impairment. Over-the-counter hearing aids are non-invasive and self-fitting aids that can help patients with mild to moderate hearing impairment to obtain hearing ability in different hearing environment, thereby improving their communication and hearing ability.

 

This newly developed “self-fitting sound enhancement earphone” consisted of advantages that can solve four major problems of the traditional hearing aids, which are: 1) the price is too high, 2) the wearer will look like a user when wearing it, 3) there will be noise or screams when worn in noisy environment, and 4) it is required to go to the hospital for adjustment, which is time-consuming. Now this new technology had gone through technology transfer and will enter the market in the near future. It is expected that it can cooperate with long-term care policy, and improve the quality of life of the elderly residents.
