A Feast of Knowledge: President Mien-Chie Hung Delivered a Speech “Cancer is No Longer Cancer” in Academia Sinica
Date：February 20, 2020
CMU President Mien-Chie Hung is a world famous cancer scientist. On February 18, President Hung was invited to give a speech in Academia Sinica with the topic “Cancer is No Longer Cancer” to share the current development of cancer research. During the speech, President Hung emphasized that nowadays the mortality rate of cancer has reduced, and the clinical care has been improved, so with early diagnosis and treatment innovation, there is new hope for cancer patients.
In Taiwan, cancer has been the top cause of death in the past 37 years. Every year, nearly 50,000 people die from cancer, which has caused a wide social concern. According to the statistics from the United States, in the past 40 years, the five-year relative survival rate of cancer has increased from 50% to 70%. Therefore, with the advancement of modern medical technology, we can expect that in the future it wouldn’t take another 40 years to increase the survival rate by 20%.
At the present day, one of the keys to reducing cancer mortality rate is the early diagnosis and treatment innovation. In addition to the early diagnosis and treatment, the rapidly developed methods such as “target therapy”, “immunotherapy”, and combined therapy all bring hope to cancer patients.
“We need to have dreams, and come into actions to make our dreams come true”, said President Hung. Developing cutting-edge medicine research is like holding a dream too, it also requires setting big goals to make the impossible possible. “We expect that there will be new generation of students and scientists that play an important role in the field of cancer treatment and prevention in the future.”
