New Horizons in Cancer Research: CMU President Mien-Chie Hung Delivered a Speech in the AACR International Conference

CMU President Mien-Chie Hung was invited to deliver a speech in the 5th International Conference of American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). President Hung addressed the latest development of Taiwan’s cancer research and exchanged research insights with international scholars. These have uplifted Taiwan’s global profile in the world academic stage.
Dr. Elizabeth M. Jaffee, the Chair of AACR and the Professor of The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at John Hopkins University, expressed that the two main purposes and targets of the conference are: 1). To establish an international forum by exchanging ideas in basic research, translational research, clinical research knowledge, and the latest findings, and 2). to commit to reducing global cancer morbidity and mortality through international cooperations.
The 5th AACR International Conference was held on May 3-5 at Shenzhen, China, with more than 400 participants in the field of basic, translational, and clinical researches from over 20 countries. This year’s conference theme focused on specific cancers as well as emerging areas of research with their applications across different disease types. The conference sessions covered drug development, epigenetics, genomics, immunotherapy, metabolism, and prevention as well as dedicated sessions on GI, liver, lung, nasopharyngeal, and gender-specific cancers. President Hung was invited to give a speech on the topic “Marker-guided target therapy, PARP inhibitors, and development of effective immune checkpoint therapy”. Over 40 international renowned oncologists delivered academic speeches and 130 poster presentations were presented in the venue.
During his visit in Shenzhen, President Mien-Chie Hung was invited to visit and do academic exchanges in Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and its affiliated hospital. President Hung was warmly welcomed by President Shiyi Chen and was very impressed by SUSTech’s cooperation with the special economic zone, its cultivation of innovative talents, and its educational characteristic to make SUSTech to become a world-class research university.
