English Course of Gengeral Education

In order to improve English ability of local students and strengthen the globalization in universities, China Medical University and Central Taiwan Teaching/Learning Resource Center has managed ‘English Courses of General Education’. These eight courses opened in the second semester of 2012 are related to the culture and history of Taiwan. There are over a thousand students choose these courses; some students are from other Asia countries, such as Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and Indonesia…etc., others are from Iraq, Arab, Malawi, and Panama…etc.

All the courses would be taught through discussion, presentation, and interaction with students and teachers, as well as field trip. Students would have the chance to go outside of campus to see, feel, and observe what they have learned in class. When asked how do they feel about these courses,  Lin from China Medical University has felt that she could understand the meaning, origin and present trend between “gua-a-hi”(歌仔戲) and glove puppet show (布袋戲) while studying ‘Introduction to Traditional Theatrical Arts in Taiwan’. She felt the present trend was ruptured though traditional theatrical arts tried to combine all kinds of new elements; however, from another perspective, these new elements are innovation because it could show vigorousness through the new way. Wu from Feng Chia University studying ‘Diverse Functions of Plants’ has expressed that he felt because of the class he could have the chance to speak English and speaking is one of the most important one for Taiwanese students. With the practice, Wu had found that he could use English to express his thoughts and feelings. Besides, the professor of ‘Diverse Functions of Plants’ has arranged a field trip which would provide an opportunity for students to see and observe the plants he had talked in class. Students could understand the specialties of plants, including the smell, touch, and function; hence, to deepen the knowledge.

‘English Courses of General Education’ are arranged from humanity, history, science, and technology. These courses would be introduced accordingly which would not only be helpful for foreign students understanding the culture of Taiwan, but also improve the interaction among students from various countries through the way of teaching in English. Local students would have the chance to interact with international students in order to encourage the culture exchange among international students and promote the culture of Taiwan.
