Alumni of Taichung First Senior High School Enjoy a Gathering at China Medical University

China Medical University (CMU) recently launched the “High School Alumni Day Series” and alumni gathering from Taichung First Senior High School (TFSHS) was the first step. The President of CMU, Professor Jong-Tsun Huang, sincerely welcomed TFSHS faculty to visit CMU to understand how their students’ new lives at CMU. President Professor Huang mentioned that more than 300 students at CMU from TFSHS, and around 200 from Taichung Girl’s First Senior High School. In addition, approximately 300 students graduated from Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School and Taipei First Girls High School. Also, many students at CMU from several other well-known senior high schools, including Taipei Municipal Zhong Shan Girls’ High School, Jingmei Girls High School, and Wu-Ling Senior High School. These senior high schools serve as the major sources of students in the field of Medicine, Chinese Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy at CMU. Many of them perform very well in the field of medicine after they finish their educaiton at CMU. For instance, the food safety inspector of the Department of Health, Ms Yang, who discovered the tainted food scandal caused by the plasticizer DEHP, is an alumna of CMU.

The President of CMU, Professor Huang further mentioned that undergraduate students sometimes have to face challenges and go through those stresses in their university life. They really need supports from their classmates, peers, and alumni as well. The main purpose of “High School Alumni Day Series” launched by CMU is to make connection between students’ high-school days and university life and to enhance alumni networking. The series are expected to support the undergraduate students to face any challenges and enjoy their academic life at CMU.

The President of TFSHS, Mr. Po-Chia Kuo said “This is the first time for our faculty at TFSHS to visit our alumni in the university!” He believed that this was a very meaningful event. With his experience in the young days, President Mr. Kuo recalled and mentioned that the freshmen are usually not familiar with the new school life when they are admitted into universities, including instructors’ teaching styles and how to pass exams and how to make up the credits when they fail. Therefore, it is a very important thing for these freshmen to learn something from their senior alumni’s learning experience. “High School Alumni Day Series” at CMU let the junior students feel cared for and encouraged.

The President of TFSHS, Mr. Kuo confidently said that TFSHS is well-known in educating senior high school students and has served as one of the major student sources for many top-ranking universities in Taiwan. The TFSHS alumni really appreciate the learning opportunities offered by CMU. Mr. Kuo mentioned that the mission of TFSHS is to educate more than 80% of their students to enter famous national universities, such as Taiwan University, Tsing Hua University, Chaio Tung University and Cheng Kung University, and medical schools as well. Mr. Kuo wishes to get the inputs of the innovative ideas in course designs from CMU in the future.
