The Third Annual Symposium of the Graduate Institute of Neural and Cognitive Sciences: Organizing a Visual World which was held on December 17th, 2010, at China Medical University, Taichung. This symposium was a one-day event, featuring a collection of highly intellectually stimulating talks and discussions among overseas and local Taiwanese scholars who specialized in the fields of visual perception, attention, object and face recognition, perceptual development, and visual neurosciences.

This annual symposium was the signature celebrating event for the recent establishment of the Graduate Institute of Neural & Cognitive Sciences (GINCS) at China Medical University in 2007. The overarching goal of this symposium was to promote and disseminate academic excellence in the central part of Taiwan, and to bring out intellectual cross-talks in the rapidly growing fields of neurosciences and cognitive sciences. The previous GINCS annual symposiums were of great success; the first one was held in June, 2008, entitled “Vision: The Science of Seeing.” The second one was held in December, 2009, with a focus on neural degeneration and regeneration.

Professor Lothar Spillmann (Department of Neurology, University of Freiburg, Germany), Professor Su-Ling Yeh (National Taiwan University), Professor Rüdiger von der Heydt (Mind/Brain Institute, Johns Hopkins University, USA), Professor Chou-Po Hung (National Yang-Ming University), Professor Alan L. Gilchrist (Department of Psychology, Rutgers University, Newark, N. J.), Professor Gary C.-W. Shyi (National Chung Cheng University ), and Professor Jingling Li (China Medical University), Professor Li-Chuan Hsu (China Medical University), and Professor Sarina H.L. Chien (China Medical University) were all invited to present their research in this field.

There were 117 people participating in this conference; the conferees came from the central, the north, and the south parts of Taiwan, including Chung Shan Medical University, National Cheng Kung University, Kaohsiung Medical University, National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences, National Central University, Chung Yuan Christian University, National Chung Hsing University, Chang Gung University, National Yang-Ming University, National Tsing Hua University, Yuan’s General Hospital, and National Taiwan University Hospital.
